Layali Diriyah 2025 Installations

Rooted in the tradition of palm weaving, "Woven Passage" honors the artistry of Najdi architecture. Crafted from woven palm fronds, the structure reflects traditional rhythmic patterns, with layered weaving techniques and ambient lighting revealing the depth of this time-honored craftsmanship. As the gateway to Layali Diriyah, the installation creates a refined and immersive atmosphere, seamlessly blending heritage with contemporary design.

"Birth of a Place" is an elegy to the ancestral foundations of Diriyah, now transformed by gentrification. Inspired by the stark contrast between natural and artificial forms, the piece explores themes of heritage and impermanence.  The malleable clay forms evoke the proliferation of high-rises and the rapid pace of urban development, speaking to cycles of decay and renewal—echoing Saudi Arabia’s efforts to restore and reimagine its architectural heritage.

"Three Golden Stages" offers a contemporary reflection on Saudi national identity. Drawing on heritage, it incorporates Qitan—a traditional clothing material—to highlight exceptional craftsmanship and cultural pride. The work traces three pivotal moments in Saudi history: its foundation, the rise of the Second Saudi State, and the unification into the modern nation.

"Lahauj" draws its form from traditional Nadji-style windows and openings designed for light and ventilation. Inspired by the desert and Saudi heritage, it bridges past and present, reviving tradition in a contemporary form that carries the stories of the land and its people.

"Birds of Diriyah" is a lighting installation set among the palm trees of Diriyah. Designed as an immersive experience, it symbolizes the birds that have historically found sanctuary in Diriyah's natural landscape, paying homage to the delicate relationship between the oasis and its native wildlife.

"Palm Fronds" is a light installation featuring luminous clustered structures inspired by Diriyah’s iconic palms. The work creates a dynamic interplay of organic rhythm and contemporary illumination.
